Fayoum

Fayoum (Arabic: الفيوم; UNGEGN: al-Fayyūm) is a governorate and city located about 100 kilometers (62 miles) southwest of Cairo in Egypt’s Western Desert. Covering an area of approximately 6,068 square kilometers (2,343 square miles), Fayoum is known for its fertile lands, natural lakes, and archaeological treasures. It is one of Egypt’s oldest inhabited regions, with a history dating back to the Pharaonic era.The governorate is home to Lake Qarun, Egypt’s third-largest lake, and the Wadi El-Hitan (Valley of the Whales), a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its fossilized remains of early whales. Fayoum also features the Hawara Pyramid, Karanis ruins, and lush agricultural landscapes fed by the Bahr Youssef canal.
